Happy Birthday to:
Matthew, Leah and Nathan
It is natural that we sometimes end up in a funk. Here are six ideas to help you start to move out of it. And if you have been reading my tips and tricks during quarantine one of the first things I am going to recommend is getting sunlight and movement to help you start the path to resetting. And today my friends the sun is shining and it looks like we are about to have a beautiful day so step outside if you can and get a little fresh air.
Today’s Tips From the Counselor Tuesday: I want to focus on you and your self-esteem.
We can be our own worst critics. Most of us carry around negative thoughts about ourselves and repeat them over and over which in turn can lower our self-esteem. What if you were asked to say aloud your self-criticisms and repeat them to someone else? Watch an experiment in the video below that is an important reminder to be kind not just to others, but to ourselves as well.
For every negative self-thought you think or write, take a moment to write a positive comment or find someone who will do it for you! Who loves you and knows you and sees the good in you? Share something positive about yourself today! Be Good to yourself and be good to others.
Happy Birthday to:

Happy Birthday to:
Doing something for others is powerful for your wellbeing. In fact, when we give to others, our brain’s pleasure and reward centers light up as if we were the receiver and not the giver! We also get a boost of feel-good endorphins and a hormone called oxytocin is released which lowers our stress!
Need some ideas?
* Write a thank you letter to a teacher, medical worker, a grocery store employee, or another helper who is working to keep us all going.
*Ask an elderly neighbor if they need help! Offer to pick up mail, walk a dog, help with watering plants, or do a household chore. Use this help card or make one of your own.
Get Help Cards
* Have a Take What You Need Yard “Sale”. Instead of selling used items, give them to others who can use them.

Calling All 8th Grade Artists
Good Morning 8th Graders,
Even though we can't be on campus right now we still very much want you to have a class of 2020 mural by the basketball courts. So we are calling all 8th grade artists- please email me a design by Friday May 15th for what you would like to see on a class of 2020 mural.
Looking forward to seeing your designs!
Miss and love you,
There are many different forms of Wellness. Today we will focus on environmental wellness.
Environmental wellness encourages us to live a lifestyle that is respectful of the Earth and our personal environment. We can’t always choose what is in the environments where we live but we can take steps to make them safer or limit our exposure to things that are unhealthy.
Some examples are …
Monitoring the air quality and knowing when it is unsafe to be outside for long periods of time
In hot weather, hydrating by drinking enough water and exercising in the early morning or later in the evening.
At home, use cleaning products that are better for us and the earth.
Happy Birthday Preston Paull!
Tips From your School Counselor Tuesday
30 Day Challenges
Setting goals and writing them down can be helpful if you want to build new healthy habits. They don’t have to be big intense challenges; they can be as simple as drinking a cup of tea everyday or flossing your teeth.
When you decide on doing a 30 Day Challenge, I suggest writing it down and tracking when you do it. Note that you’ve done. Reflect on how you feel. Notice if it makes a difference in your overall well being. Start small and build on things that you want to improve and know that small things make a big difference.
IDEAS for 30 Day Challenges

Being in nature, or even viewing scenes of nature, reduces anger, fear, and stress and increases pleasant feelings. Exposure to nature not only makes you feel better emotionally, but it also contributes to your physical wellbeing, reducing blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension, and the production of stress hormones. Natural sunlight can reset our natural clocks and improve our sleep.
- Stand barefoot in the grass and come in direct contact with the earth.
- Exercise outside! Even just a walk around the block with or without your earbuds or headphones can boost your mood. Listen for birds, crickets, the wind, what sounds do you hear?
- Take a live virtual tour of Yosemite National Park
- Visit our national parks online anytime at:

I am feeling pretty good that they will be opening the parks up. Even a"light" opening it gives me hope and is something to celebrate! Hip hip hooray for some good news during SIP! So Sleep! Let's talk about sleep! Healthy sleep habits can make a big difference in your quality of life. I talk to a lot of students (yes all day long even from home) and I have heard about what time some kids are going to bed and I am shocked. Wozers! Students in middle school need between 8-11 hours of sleep a night. Many kids are super sleep deprived which can mess with the way they feel, behave, and function. Good sleep is critical to your well being.
Tips for improving sleep
Set a consistent sleep-schedule-going to sleep and waking up at the same time everyday.
Practicing a relaxing bedtime ritual.
Get sunshine on your skin
Keep a healthy diet
Don't drink caffeine
Keep naps short
Limit screen time before bed and don't use electronics in bed
Happy Birthday Cody Freitas!
Tips From The Counselor Tuesday
Some of you may have seen this floating around the cyber world posted by Brene’ Brown.
My tip today is to acknowledge days where you might be hitting the wall or are having a hard day. Know when they come up this is normal, know it will pass, and try to find the strategies that work to help you to work through them. If you are hitting the wall please know there are teachers, support staff, and administrators that care a great deal about you. Please ask for help if you need it!
~Ms. Andersen email@example.com
How to feel less out-of-control when facing the unknown can be achieved through “effortful optimism” Optimism can be thought of as reframing adversity in a healthy and realistic way while taking ownership of finding solutions.
Three things to tell yourself:
- This will not last forever.
- This is not changing everything
- My efforts will make a difference.
Here is a quick video about exercising optimism: Click here
If you want to watch something uplifting just check out Some Good News with John Krasinski! We are having Prom Night at our house this Friday Evening. Fancy clothes, yummy food, and a good Spotify playlist. Watch this video, it will make your heart happy and give you an idea of how to make the days a little more exciting with a little bit of creativity.
Tips From the Counselor
It is easier to keep up, rather than to catch up. So today my friends start where you are, do what you can, and make the best out of the day. If there are obstacles in your way, please know that is normal, to be expected, and I encourage you to reach out to our school staff if you need some help. Please don't stop working, continue to grow and learn, and embrace that you can do all of this in your PJ's if you want you too.
Happy Birthday Johanna and Carlos!

Happy birthday Max S. & Sebastian D.!
THEME NIGHT! We have implemented Friday Theme Night. We meet outside our house and have a not-luck (which is the opposite of a pot luck) in the front of our house and so does our neighbor across the way. We are at a very safe social distance. We dress up in a theme and we play music that goes with that theme. We watch the same movies but at our own houses. This week we are thinking about sports night. We will play music like this: We are the Champions by Queen, Thunderstruck by AC/DC, and Journey's -Don't Stop Believing. We will eat food you find at sporting events like hot dogs, fries, and popcorn and we will watch a feel good sports movie like: The Sandlot. Having something like this gives us something to look forward to after a long week of distance learning. Please share your ideas if you have some! I want to know how you are making Friday Fabulous at your home.
Happy birthday Teagan & Angel C.!
Gratitude is a feeling of appreciation. You recognize that something is valuable to you which has nothing to do with its monetary worth. It’s looking for the good in our lives.
Even when times are tough, there is always something or someone to be grateful for.
Here are some prompts to help you get started:

Wellness Wednesday 3
There are many different dimensions of Wellness, today I am focusing on Physical Wellness. In an uncertain time where I don't have a lot of control over things, I have found that I do have control over my physical wellness, which helps everything. I know many of you are missing your organized activities and sports which keep you active and you are having to find new ways to stay busy. So building in activities you can do from home can help fill that gap.
Today's Wellness Tip is a link for yoga, since I am on a kick and on day 10 of my 30 day yoga challenge. It is 20 Minutes of Yoga for Teens: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kgZnJqzNaU#action=share
What are you doing to stay committed to your physical wellness?
Happy belated birthday Riley!
Tips from the Counselor Tuesday
Do something for someone else today. Going out of your way to make a difference for someone else can brighten their day as well as yours.
We had a friend make masks for our family and drop them off at our doorstep. Now we are paying it forward and making them for others.
Here are some ideas to get you started today:
- Thank someone who has helped you lately.
- Send 3 Genuine Texts to people letting them know how much you care about them.
- Call your grandparents or someone in your family that means a lot to you.
- Let a teacher know how much you appreciate them.
- Write thank you notes to essential workers.
On my google classroom there is an attachment for sunshine notes that you can use to send a little note to someone. Code: 6wrayyc

Mindful Monday: Hello everyone! Let’s start our week off with intention, mindfulness, and a bit of calm. Set your goals for the week, use your planner to get things going, schedule some time throughout the day to take care of yourself. Please be mindful to get good sleep, eat healthy foods, drink water and move throughout the day. If you are overwhelmed at all just remember to take care of YOU first. Here is a link to a mindfulness video that can walk you through 3 minutes of guided mindfulness. It may seem a little cheesy at first but using this can be really helpful once you get used to it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEfs5TJZ6Nk
Here is a link to a very cool yoga instructor that has great youtube videos, Yoga with Adrienne. Here is a 5 minute stretch break that can help with the sitting and computer work we are doing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQFf38xeBww
Have a great day!
You did it! Week 2 of Distant Learning. Please take a moment to note how fabulous you are under not so fabulous circumstances. Students, teachers, administrators and staff you are doing amazing under these challenging times. I am proud of each one of you and I know it will take some time to adjust to such big changes but you are doing great. Please celebrate the small things today and think of one thing you can do that might make you feel good.
*** Today for Fabulous Friday: I challenge you to get up, get out of your sweats or PJ’s, get dressed and put on something fabulous. Sometimes just getting ourselves up and going for the day, something kinda small can have a big impact. Now as Mr. Page would say, Make it a Great Day Willowside….Now Go Be Fabulous! ***
Having an attitude of gratitude for the small things can help us persevere when times are tough. Write down three things that you are thankful for and you can send them to me at email@example.com! I would love to fill up my google classroom full of your messages of gratitude!
Here are my three things for the week:
- Taking long walks on the creek with my dog, my husband and girls (when they come with me).
- Cooking meals and making new recipes since I don’t have to be at sports practices every night.
- Making phone calls to my best friends rather than sending them a text message. My heart feels full when I hear their voices.
Please check out the updated WS Library pageLIBRARY LINK that has information and instruction on using our digital books eShelf called Sora. There's also a great little video, "How to find Sora," that Logan, Ella, Maddie, and Dylan helped Ms. Emory with. Watch for different author videos-this week is R.L.Stine talking about what he likes to read.
There was an email sent out to all of you guys containing a video your student body representatives have made for you so don’t forget to check that out.
Make it a great day Willowside by being safe, respectful, responsible and kind!

Origami has been a huge hit this week for boredom busters for my youngest daughter. . She has folded over 35 paper ninja stars. So for today's craft and boredom buster, find some paper and get folding. Don't worry if you don't have origami paper at home you can use regular 8x11 paper and cut it to the 3x3 size. Below are links to simple activities to do. You can even fold money. More to come on this!
